Sri Lanka U-19 Thrash Bangladesh U-19 by 98 Runs in Series Opener
Bangladesh U-19 suffered a heavy 98-run defeat against Sri Lanka U-19 in the first match of their six-match ODI series. A brilliant five-wicket haul from Bigneshwaran Akash dismantled Bangladesh’s batting line-up as they were bowled out for just 143 runs in 33.3 overs.
Sri Lanka U-19, opting to bat first, posted a challenging total of 241 for 6. The hosts recovered from a precarious 114 for 6, thanks to a crucial 127-run stand between Chamika Hinatigala and Kavija Gamage. Chamika remained unbeaten on 78 off 93 balls, while Gamage contributed a vital 60 from 59 balls, leaving Bangladesh’s bowlers frustrated.
Iqbal Hasan Emon provided an early spark, dismissing both Sri Lankan openers during the powerplay. However, the middle overs saw Bangladesh lose their grip, despite Rizan, Al Fahad, and Debashish Deba picking up wickets.
Chasing 242, Bangladesh started promisingly with Jawad Abrar, Kalam Siddique, and captain Azizul Hakim Tamim putting together steady runs. The opening stand reached 29 before Jawad departed for 14. Skipper Tamim added 24 but could not convert his start.
From 74 for 1, Bangladesh collapsed to 90 for 6, as Bigneshwaran Akash wreaked havoc, claiming wickets in successive overs. Shahriar Ahmed and Rizan Hossain fell for ducks, while Debashish Deba managed just six runs before becoming Akash’s fourth victim.
Akash completed his five-wicket haul by dismissing Mohammad Abdullah, replicating his earlier feat against Bangladesh during his U-17 days.
Struggling throughout, Bangladesh U-19 were bundled out for 143, conceding a 1-0 lead to Sri Lanka in the series. The second ODI will be played on April 28.
