Should the World Test Championship be a three-test series?

After a year of playing Test matches, the World Test Championship (WTC) title is decided through just one match. Is this system logical? Former cricketers David Warner and Ravi Shastri have raised questions about the format used to determine the WTC champion.

Australian broadcaster Fox Cricket posted a video on their official Twitter where Ravi Shastri, Adam Gilchrist, and David Warner are seen discussing the World Test Championship during the first Test between India and Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

The final of the World Test Championship is currently decided by just one match at a neutral venue. Warner asks Shastri and Gilchrist for their thoughts on the WTC system. Shastri responds, "It should be a three-match series."

Warner agrees with Shastri, adding, "A lot can happen in one game."

India has reached the World Test Championship final twice but has lost both times. First, in 2021, under the leadership of Virat Kohli, India was defeated by New Zealand, and then again in 2023, under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, they were defeated by Australia.

For India to directly qualify for the World Test Championship final, which will be held at Lord’s in June 2025, they must win four Test matches in Australia.
