Sharafuddoula Saikat Adds New Glory to Bangladesh Cricket with Impressive Umpiring in Edgbaston Test
Bangladeshi umpire Sharafuddoula Ibne Shahid Saikat has written a new chapter of pride in the country’s cricket history with his outstanding performance in the second Test between India and England at Edgbaston. His precise decision-making drew widespread praise, including from renowned Indian commentator Harsha Bhogle.
While India’s commanding 336-run victory was the main headline of the match, Saikat’s umpiring also became a key talking point. Ten of his on-field decisions were reviewed during the five-day Test, and eight of them were upheld—a remarkable level of accuracy by international standards.
He stood as an on-field umpire alongside New Zealand’s Chris Gaffaney. After the match, Harsha Bhogle posted on Twitter:
"The umpiring in this match has been outstanding. You expect that from Chris Gaffaney but Sharafuddoula Saikat was excellent."
One of the match’s most significant moments was the LBW dismissal of Ben Stokes. Sundar’s delivery produced a big appeal, but it was unclear in real-time whether the ball hit bat or pad first. Saikat confidently gave Stokes out without delay. The England captain reviewed the decision, only for ball-tracking to confirm a direct impact on the pad and the ball going on to hit the stumps. The original decision stood.
Saikat’s accuracy and composure have impressed cricket analysts and fans alike. The 48-year-old experienced umpire is also set to officiate as an on-field umpire in the third and final Test of the series at Lord’s on 10 July.
