Senior ICC officials Chris Tetley, Claire Furlong resign after T20 World Cup
Just as the aftermath of last month’s T20 World Cup was settling, two top ICC officials, Claire Furlong and Chris Tetley, have resigned following criticism of the tournament’s organization. This resignation comes ahead of the ICC’s annual conference in Sri Lanka next Friday, where they were expected to be held accountable for the World Cup’s organization.
Claire Furlong was the ICC’s General Manager of Marketing and Communications, while Chris Tetley was a member of the venue inspection team and head of the organizing committee. They were accused of spending excessively on matches held in the USA during the T20 World Cup.
Upon receiving the complaints, Director Pankaj Khimji sent letters to all members requesting a detailed account of the World Cup’s expenses and called for an investigation. However, Furlong and Tetley submitted their resignations before the investigation commenced.
Cricket-focused website Cricbuzz offers a different perspective, suggesting that Furlong and Tetley had planned their retirements long before, specifically before the World Cup. They continued in their roles to ensure the smooth organization of the event, as it would have been difficult for a new appointee to handle such a significant tournament on short notice.
Additionally, they faced criticism over the drop-in pitch at Nassau County Stadium in the USA, where all eight matches were low-scoring affairs. Furlong and Tetley are expected to attend the annual meeting in Sri Lanka next week, where these issues are likely to be discussed.
