The Sri Lanka Cricket Board is considering extending the contract of head coach Sanath Jayasuriya, following a series of satisfactory performances since he took over as interim coach in July. Under his guidance, the team has shown promise against India, England, and New Zealand, leading to discussions about keeping him in the role for another year.
Jayasuryia was appointed as interim coach after the resignation of former head coach Chris Silverwood at the end of June. The board has already begun the process of making his position permanent.
Ashley de Silva, the CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket, informed ESPN Cricinfo, "We are in the final stages of contract negotiations with him. You can expect to hear more in the next two or three days."
Initially, Jayasuriya was appointed as a cricket consultant for a year in December of last year. He has since taken on the role of head coach, participating in the T20 World Cup with the team.
While Sri Lanka has faced challenges, including a T20 series loss to India and two Test defeats in England, the team's overall success has overshadowed these setbacks. They are now aiming for a spot in the World Test Championship final.
Players have reacted positively to Jayasuriya's coaching. Experienced Test player Angelo Mathews stated, "Sanath Jayasuriya is doing a great job as a consultant and now as a coach. He communicates well and gives us a lot of freedom. We are all working towards a common goal. He has done a fantastic job in developing players, and we want him to stay."
