Praveen Jayawickrama charged under ICC's anti-corruption code
The International Cricket Council on Thursday (August 28) charged Sri Lanka spinner Praveen Jayawickrama for breaches of its anti-corruption code. The charges relate to the 25-year-old falling foul of three separate codes, in international cricket as well as the 2021 season of the Lanka Premier League.
These include breaches of:
- Article 2.4.4 - Failing to report to the Anti-Corruption Unit, without unnecessary delay, details of an approach he received to carry out fixing in future International Matches.
- Article 2.4.4 - Failing to report to the Anti-Corruption Unit, without unnecessary delay, details of an approach he received in which he was asked to approach another player, on a corrupter's behalf, to carry out fixing in the 2021 Lanka Premier League.
- Article 2.4.7 - Obstructing the investigation by deleting messages in which the approaches and offers to engage in corrupt conduct were made.
Jayawickrama will have 14 days and until August 20 to respond to ICC's charges with the governing body of the sport also authorised to take action with respect to his charges pertaining to the Lanka Premier League 2021 alongside his international cricket transgressions.
Jayawickrama has played five games in each format of the game for the national team since making his debut in May 2021. The last of his 15 appearances for Sri Lanka came in a T20I against Australia in June 2022. He was also a member of Sri Lanka's Asia Cup-winning squad of 2022 but didn't feature in the XI for any game.
