New Zealand Whitewashes India, Creates History
At Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium, New Zealand made history by whitewashing India. With this defeat, India tasted the bitterness of a home Test series whitewash after 24 years. In a nail-biting third and final Test, the Kiwis defeated India by 25 runs.
This match was crucial for both teams in their battle to stay in contention for the World Test Championship final. Winning the toss, New Zealand batted first and scored 235 runs. Daryl Mitchell was the top scorer in their first innings with 82, while Will Young added 71 runs. Other batsmen could not make significant contributions, with only captain Tom Latham scoring 28 and Glenn Phillips 17.
For India, Ravindra Jadeja took five wickets, and Washington Sundar claimed four in New Zealand's first innings.
In response, India scored 263 runs in their first innings, taking a 28-run lead. Shubman Gill missed out on a century, dismissed for 90, while Rishabh Pant scored 60. Washington Sundar contributed 38 runs after taking four wickets with the ball. Ajaz Patel took five wickets for New Zealand.
Trailing by 28 runs, New Zealand managed only 174 in their second innings. Will Young top-scored with 51, while Glenn Phillips and Devon Conway added 26 and 22, respectively.
Ravindra Jadeja took another five-wicket haul for India, while Ravichandran Ashwin claimed three wickets in New Zealand’s second innings.
Chasing a target of 148 runs to win, India's top order collapsed under pressure from New Zealand's bowlers. India lost five wickets for just 29 runs, with Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Shubman Gill all failing to deliver.
Rishabh Pant attempted to stabilize one end, playing aggressively and scoring quickly. He built a 42-run partnership off 53 balls with Jadeja, keeping India’s hopes alive.
However, Pant’s dismissal broke his 35-run stand with Sundar after he scored a brisk 64 off 57 balls. Glenn Phillips struck twice in two balls, which ultimately sealed India’s fate. Ajaz Patel provided the finishing touch, and New Zealand won by 25 runs.
Ajaz Patel took six wickets in India's second innings, while Glenn Phillips took three.
Ajaz Patel, with 11 wickets in the match, was named Player of the Match, while Will Young was awarded Player of the Series.
