Mushfiqur Rahim Announces Retirement from ODI Cricket After Disappointing 2025 Champions Trophy Performance
Following a disappointing performance in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, Bangladesh’s veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim has announced his retirement from One-Day International (ODI) cricket. His final ODI match took place against New Zealand at Rawalpindi, marking the end of his illustrious career in the format.
Having made his ODI debut in 2006, Mushfiqur played 274 matches, scoring 9 centuries and 49 half-centuries. In his last ODI appearance, he managed just 2 runs, bringing his total runs in ODIs to 7,795.
With the next ODI World Cup scheduled for 2027, Mushfiqur has decided to step aside in order to help the team prepare for that event.
In a heartfelt message on his verified Facebook page, Mushfiqur wrote, “Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. Today, I announce my retirement from ODI cricket. Alhamdulillah for everything. Though our achievements may be limited globally, one thing is certain: whenever I stepped onto the field for my country, I gave 100% with sincerity and integrity.”
Reflecting on his decision, he continued, “The last few weeks have been very challenging for me, and I have come to understand that this is my destiny. Allah says in the Qur’an: ‘Wa tu'izzu man tasha wa tu'zilu man tasha’ - ‘And He honors whom He wills and humiliates whom He wills.’ (3:26).”
He concluded by expressing his gratitude: “I sincerely thank my family, friends, and fans, for whom I have played cricket over the past 19 years. Jazakallah Khair.”
Mushfiqur’s retirement marks the end of an era for Bangladesh cricket, and his contributions to the game will be remembered by fans and fellow cricketers alike.
