Mushfiq overwhelmed after historic feat in Mirpur: dedicates century to grandparents

The historic Dhaka Test between Bangladesh and Ireland is underway at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. For veteran Bangladeshi batter Mushfiqur Rahim, the match carries special significance as the 100th Test of his career. He made the milestone even more memorable with the bat, scoring a century early on the second day—adding a remarkable new chapter to Bangladesh’s Test history.

Mushfiq remained unbeaten on 99 at the close of play on the opening day. On Thursday morning, he added just one more run to reach the long-awaited landmark. Facing 214 deliveries, he scored 106 runs and became only the 11th cricketer in the world to register a century in his 100th Test match.

At the end of the day, an emotional Mushfiq came to the press conference. As he dedicated one of the most meaningful centuries of his life to his late grandparents, he was visibly moved.

Remembering his late paternal and maternal grandparents, Mushfiq said,
“When they (my grandparents) were alive, they were my biggest fans. Before they passed away, when they were ill, I still remember they told me, ‘We want to live a few more days just to watch you play.’”

He then described how deeply their blessings influenced his cricketing journey.
Emphasizing the importance of their prayers, he added,
“Very few grandchildren are blessed like this. I am where I am today because of their prayers. Many people have contributed to my success, but I want to dedicate this special achievement to them.”

Mushfiq didn’t forget to mention another significant pillar of his life—his wife.
Recalling her sacrifices and constant support, he said,
“The biggest sacrifice is the support my wife has given me. I practice more than many others, and it wouldn’t have been possible without her support. She raised the kids staying up at night and never let me take pressure. I never said this in front of her, and she complains about that too. I thank her.”

He also reflected on his most cherished cricketing memory—his first double-century. Explaining why that moment stands out, he said,
“The match in which I scored my first double hundred is my most favorite moment. After that innings, many people started believing that scoring a double century is possible.”
