Litton Expresses Frustration Over Selectors at Press Conference
Bangladesh captain Liton Das is in the spotlight ahead of the T20 series against Ireland. At a press conference, he made explosive remarks in response to journalists’ questions, alleging that his opinion was not considered during team selection.
Shamim Patowary has been left out of the T20 squad. When asked why by the captain, Liton clearly stated that it is unfortunate that such a performer was not included in the team. He added that this decision was not under his control; everything is selector-centric.
"Shamim Patowary being left out is unfortunate. Shamim is a performer worthy of the T20 squad. Of course, it would have been better if he were in. This is not my call. Totally a selector call. I don’t know why, but the selectors left Shamim out without giving me any notice. Without any notice."
His expression is not merely a personal grievance but also raises questions about team management and the selection process. How this will affect the players’ morale and team coordination on the field during the series is now the biggest question.
"I thought that as a captain, at least, one knows which players will be in or out when managing a team. But I hope that every Bangladeshi player is the best player, which is why they are in the national team. Even if not all fifteen players are selected, they will perform well. But I don’t see any reason behind Shamim being left out. And I never received any notice about why he was excluded. It would have been better if he were in the team."
When asked later whether he had contacted the board as captain, and whether the situation was ‘insulting,’ Liton said:
"I have been clearly told that I have to work with the team given by the selection panel and the board. I have no say over which player I want or don’t want. Until now, I thought that as a captain, you plan how to organize your team. But I recently learned that the team will be given to me, and my job is to make the best out of that team on the field."
