Litton Das Leads Bangladesh in T20 Series Against West Indies Amidst Form Concerns
With Najmul Hossain Shanto absent, Litton Kumar Das has taken on the captaincy for Bangladesh in the T20 series against West Indies. However, Litton has been struggling with his batting form. Just recently, he faced a series of failures in the ODI format. Despite this, many were surprised to see Litton leading the team in the T20 series.
On Monday, while speaking to the media at the Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla Cricket Stadium, the chief selector of the national team, Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu, discussed Liton’s leadership. According to Lipu, now is not the ideal time to talk in detail about Litton’s captaincy.
"We also understand that Litton Das is not being as consistent in white-ball cricket as expected, given his ability as a batter. In fact, we kept him out of the playing XI in a series-deciding match. Right now, he’s the captain for the T20 series. It’s not the right time to speak in detail about this," Lipu said.
However, Lipu expressed concern about Liton’s dismissals, saying, "We are definitely concerned about the manner in which he’s getting out. If any correction is needed, the coaches are there for that. There’s a break, and the coaches will work on it. There are still two more matches, and if he can bounce back, that would be good."
When asked about how an out-of-form player like Liton becomes the captain of Bangladesh, Lipu responded, "It might have been a short-term decision. The board didn’t have many alternatives. At the end of the day, as the captain of a winning team, we expect Liton to inspire the team."
Despite Bangladesh winning the match, the top-order batting continues to falter. Lipu discussed this issue further, stating, "The team management is looking for the right answers. If our batting at the top had not been in disarray, which has been happening since the Pakistan series, the situation might have been worse. The middle-order has performed quite well in this series, otherwise, it could have been much worse. I’m sure the coaches are working on these issues. It’s also true that we have missed some key players due to injuries. The coaches are definitely addressing these concerns."
