Lipu Granted One Month Extension, Historic Womens BPL Set for April
Cricket fans have received two major updates at once. On one hand, there is a possible reshuffle in the national team’s selection committee; on the other, the inaugural Women’s Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is set to begin in April for the first time in history.
For now, there is no major change in the position of chief selector of the national team. The tenure of Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu, which was scheduled to end on 28 February, has been extended by one month by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). During this period, the board plans to reorganize the selection panel.
This time, the appointment of the new chief selector will follow a different process. Interested candidates will have to go through an oral interview. Although former national captain Habibul Bashar’s name has surfaced as a potential successor to Lipu, no final announcement will be made until the formal process is completed.
However, the real excitement among cricket fans now surrounds the Women’s BPL. According to the board-approved schedule, the tournament will begin on 4 April and continue until 14 April. Matches will be held in Dhaka and Chattogram. Three franchise teams will select local players through a draft system, and overseas cricketers are also expected to participate.
The BCB believes this tournament marks a significant step toward building a professional structure for women’s cricket in Bangladesh. Detailed information regarding finalization of franchises, draft policies, broadcasting, and commercial partnerships will be announced gradually.
With a potential reshuffle in the selection panel on one side and the historic launch of the Women’s BPL on the other, Bangladesh’s cricket arena is buzzing with anticipation.
