Lasith Malinga Appointed Sri Lankas Bowling Consultant Ahead of T20 World Cup
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has appointed former star fast bowler Lasith Malinga as a short-term fast bowling consultant ahead of the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
Malinga will work with the national team’s fast bowlers from December 15, 2025 to January 25, 2026. The appointment is part of Sri Lanka’s preparations for the T20 World Cup, which is set to begin in February. Sri Lanka are co-hosting the tournament along with India, having previously hosted the event in 2012.
Malinga’s primary responsibility will be to prepare the national pace bowlers for the World Cup. Sri Lanka Cricket is particularly keen to utilize his vast experience in death bowling in the T20 format.
In a statement, SLC said, “Sri Lanka Cricket aims to strengthen its preparations for the upcoming World Cup by leveraging Lasith Malinga’s extensive international experience and expertise in death bowling, especially in the shortest format of the game.”
Regarded as one of the finest white-ball bowlers of his generation, Malinga claimed over 500 wickets in international cricket. He captained Sri Lanka to their only T20 World Cup title in 2014 in Bangladesh and also played a key role in Mumbai Indians’ multiple Indian Premier League (IPL) title triumphs.
Sri Lanka will begin their World Cup campaign on the second day of the tournament, facing Ireland in Colombo. Australia, Zimbabwe and Oman are the other teams in their group.
