Juiarias Blitz Helps Bangladesh Begin World Cup Campaign with Record Chase
Bangladesh could hardly have asked for a better start to their Women’s T20 World Cup campaign. After a disciplined bowling display, the Tigresses produced a confident batting performance to defeat the Netherlands by six wickets. Opener Juiaria Ferdous starred with a sparkling half-century that laid the foundation for a comfortable chase.
After winning the toss in Birmingham, the Netherlands opted to bat first. However, Bangladesh’s bowlers kept the opposition under pressure from the outset. Losing wickets at regular intervals, the Dutch side managed 139 for 8 in their allotted 20 overs.
Marufa Akter was the most successful bowler for Bangladesh, claiming two wickets. Fariha Trisna, Sanjida Akter Meghla, Rabeya Khan and Ritu Moni also chipped in with one wicket each as they effectively restricted the flow of runs.
Chasing 140 for victory, openers Juiaria Ferdous and Dilara Akter got Bangladesh off to a positive start. The pair scored freely during the powerplay and provided a solid platform for the innings. Their opening partnership yielded 67 runs and put Bangladesh firmly in control of the chase.
Although Dilara departed after scoring 26, Juiaria continued her attacking approach. She reached her second T20 half-century in just 32 deliveries with a six. The right-hander was dismissed on the very next ball, but not before scoring an impressive 50 off 33 balls, including seven fours and two sixes. Bangladesh faced a brief setback after the quick dismissals of captain Nigar Sultana and Sobhana Mostary.
However, Sharmin Akter and Swarna Akter ensured there were no further complications. The pair stitched together an unbeaten 56-run partnership for the fifth wicket and guided Bangladesh to victory with five balls to spare. Sharmin remained unbeaten on 37, while Swarna contributed a valuable 18 not out.
With this victory, Bangladesh registered their highest successful run chase in Women’s T20 World Cup history. Nigar Sultana’s side will next face Australia in their second Group-stage match in Leeds on June 17.
