Ireland Beat India by 34 Runs in the First T20I
Ireland scripted a golden chapter in their cricket history by defeating a strong Indian side by 34 runs in the first T20 International at Stormont Cricket Ground in Belfast.
It was Ireland’s first-ever victory over India in any format of international cricket. After winning the toss, India captain Shreyas Iyer elected to field first. Batting first, Ireland posted a competitive total of 182 for 9 in their allotted 20 overs.
Captain Lorcan Tucker led the way with a responsible 50 off 36 balls. Lower down the order, Gareth Delany played a crucial knock of 49 from just 32 deliveries, smashing three fours and three sixes to help Ireland reach a formidable total.
For India, Harshit Rana claimed three wickets for 24 runs, while Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel picked up two wickets each. However, pacer Prasidh Krishna endured a difficult outing, conceding 57 runs in his four overs without taking a wicket.
Chasing 183, India got off to a flying start thanks to opener Abhishek Sharma, who blasted a scintillating 50 off just 20 balls, including seven fours and two sixes. However, he received little support from the other end as Sanju Samson (5), Ishan Kishan (1), and captain Shreyas Iyer (3) all departed cheaply, putting India under pressure.
Tilak Varma (19) and Shivam Dube (25) tried to revive the chase in the middle order, but Ireland’s disciplined bowling attack dismantled the Indian batting line-up. India were eventually bowled out for 148 in 18.5 overs.
Making his T20I debut, Matthew Hallard starred with the ball and was named Player of the Match after taking three wickets for 28 runs. Spinner Matthew Humphreys also claimed three wickets for 38 runs, while another debutant, Jay Mundra, picked up two wickets for 26 runs.
With this historic victory, Ireland took a 1-0 lead in the two-match T20I series. The second and final match of the series will be played at the same venue on June 28.
