India suffered a humiliating 408-run defeat in the second Test in Guwahati on Wednesday, handing South Africa a 2–0 series sweep. It is India’s biggest defeat by runs on home soil and marks their second consecutive Test series loss at home after 12 years of dominance.
This is South Africa’s first Test series win in India since 2000. Under Temba Bavuma’s leadership, the Proteas once again proved their growing strength.
Declaring their second innings at 260/5, South Africa set India a mammoth target of 549 runs. On the final day, India folded for just 140, showing little resistance except for Ravindra Jadeja, who scored a fighting 54. His lone battle, however, was far from enough to revive India’s hopes.
South African spinner Simon Harmer dismantled the Indian batting order with a six-wicket haul. In the field, Aiden Markram made history by taking nine catches in the match—the most by any fielder in a Test.
As reigning World Test Champions, South Africa’s dominance continues. Since their title-winning triumph at Lord’s against Australia, the Proteas have now won 11 of their 12 Tests under Bavuma.
After winning the first Test by 30 runs in Kolkata, South Africa maintained complete control in Guwahati as well. The victory further strengthens their position in second place in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship standings, while India slip to fifth.
