Groups, fixtures revealed for ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024
ICC (International Cricket Council) has finalized the schedule of the 2024 ICC Women's T20 World Cup today. The forthcoming edition of the Women's T20 World Cup will take place in Bangladesh from October 3 to October 20 this year.
Ten teams will compete in 23 matches over 18 days in two stadiums. Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur and Sylhet International Cricket Stadium will host the women's excellence in a concise format.
The schedule was unveiled at a five star hotel in Dhaka, the capital of the host country. Among the attendees were Nazmul Hasan Papon, President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the Minister of Youth and Sports of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, along with Geoff Allardice, ICC's Chief Executive, Nigar Sultana Joti, Captain of the Bangladesh women's team, and Harmanpreet Kaur, Captain of the Indian women's team.
Before the official announcement of the schedule, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina met with the captains of the women's teams of Bangladesh and India at her official residence.
Group A comprises Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, and Qualifier 1, while Group B consists of Bangladesh, England, South Africa, West Indies, and Qualifier 2.
Matches of Group A will be held in Sylhet, while Group B matches will take place in Dhaka. This means all matches hosted by Bangladesh will be in Mirpur.
On October 3, the opening day of the World Cup, Bangladesh will face Qualifier 2. On the same day, South Africa will take on England in a repeat of the 2023 runner-up clash.
Australia, the six-time Women's T20 World Cup champions, will kick off their campaign against Qualifier 1 on October 4 in Sylhet. India and Pakistan will face each other on October 6 in Sylhet.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the semifinals. The first semifinal will be held in Sylhet on October 17, while the second semifinal will take place in Dhaka on October 18. The final match will be held at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on October 20.
It is worth mentioning that the teams from Qualifier 1 and 2 will be determined from the ongoing ICC Women's T20 World Cup Qualifiers.
Before the start of the tournament, from September 27 to October 1, there will be ten preparatory matches at the BKSP (Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan).
