Gautam Gambhir's Choices for India's Coaching Panel Including Abhishek Nayar
Following the T20 World Cup, India's head coach Rahul Dravid stepped down, along with his support staff. Recently, Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as the head coach for all three formats of the Indian cricket team.
It is reported that Gambhir requested the Indian board to allow him to select his own support staff. Accordingly, Gambhir has recommended names to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the position of assistant coach for the Indian cricket team.
Sources in various Indian media suggest that Gautam Gambhir wants Abhishek Nayar as the assistant coach of the Indian cricket team. Nayar is currently serving as the assistant coach of the IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
Abhishek Nayar played a significant role in KKR's title win in the recent IPL season. Although Nayar's international playing career was brief, with only three One Day Internationals (ODIs) for the national team, he has extensive knowledge of domestic cricket.
Nayar has a good relationship not only with Gautam Gambhir but also with captain Rohit Sharma, as they have played together. While initially it was rumored that Nayar might be the batting coach, he is more likely to join as the assistant coach. Gautam Gambhir himself might take on the role of the batting coach.
Although no final decision has been made regarding the other coaching positions, the leading candidates for the bowling coach are Lakshmipathy Balaji and Vinay Kumar. Both have previously worked with Gambhir at Kolkata Knight Riders.
