Gautam Gambhir Wants Morne Morkel as India's Bowling Coach
Gautam Gambhir has taken on the role of head coach for the Indian cricket team. Now, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is swiftly looking to finalize the positions of bowling and fielding coaches. Gambhir has recommended former South African bowler Morne Morkel for the position of bowling coach to the BCCI.
Several names have been discussed recently for the role of India's bowling coach, including Lakshmipathy Balaji and R Vinay Kumar. Initially, Gambhir himself recommended these two. However, when the BCCI did not show much interest, Gambhir suggested considering Morne Morkel.
The popular Indian cricket website Cricbuzz recently confirmed that the BCCI has already been in talks with Morkel. The former South African bowler has played 86 Tests, 117 One-Day Internationals, and 44 T20 matches for his country.
Morne Morkel, who retired from international cricket in 2018 at the age of 39, has considerable coaching experience. Last year, he served as Pakistan's bowling coach during the ODI World Cup held in India. Morkel also has coaching experience in the IPL, where he has served as the bowling coach for the Lucknow Super Giants.
Head coach Gautam Gambhir wants the rest of the coaching panel to be composed of support staff of his choice. Gambhir and Morkel have worked together before. In 2014, when Morkel joined Kolkata Knight Riders, Gambhir was the team's captain. They have also worked together at the Lucknow Super Giants.
