Rahul Dravid's tenure as coach ended with India's victory in the T20 World Cup held in the USA and West Indies. Speculations were rife that Gautam Gambhir would be the new coach. It is known that the BCCI had started discussions with Gambhir during the 2024 IPL season.

This year's IPL saw the Kolkata Knight Riders clinch the title, with Gambhir working as a mentor for the team. Despite having no prior coaching experience, this IPL stint has paved the way for Gambhir to become the head coach of the Indian cricket team.

Gautam Gambhir won the 2007 and 2011 World Cups with the national team and the 2012 and 2014 IPL titles with Kolkata Knight Riders. It remains to be seen what success he can bring to the Indian team as the coach.
