CWAB Election Thursday: Mithun and Selim Shahed Face Off for President

The long-awaited election of the Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) will finally be held this Thursday (September 4) at Mirpur, bringing back a vote battle after nearly 12 years. Excitement is building among cricketers as the polls approach.

Two familiar faces are vying for the post of president — former national team cricketer Mohammad Mithun and former CWAB official and ex-cricketer Selim Shahed.

The voting will take place from 3 pm to 5 pm in a temporary booth set up in front of the Academy building at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, Mirpur. The election proceedings will follow CWAB’s general meeting and a lunch break scheduled at 1:30 pm.

A total of 215 voters, including former and current national and first-class cricketers, are eligible to cast their votes. Those residing outside Dhaka or abroad will be able to vote online at www.cwab.info during the same voting hours.

The voter list features many big names in Bangladesh cricket, including Mushfiqur Rahim, Tamim Iqbal, Mahmudullah Riyad, Litton Das, Taskin Ahmed, as well as former captains Aminul Islam Bulbul, Athar Ali Khan, Khaled Mashud Pilot, Habibul Bashar, Akram Khan, and Minhajul Abedin Nannu. Current BCB selectors Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu and Abdur Razzak are also among the voters.

From women’s cricket, captain Nigar Sultana Joty, Nahida Akter, Fahima Khatun, and former cricketer and ICC umpire Shathira Jakir Jessy are also on the list.

Apart from the presidency, eight members of the executive committee have already been elected unopposed: Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Akbar Ali, Rumana Ahmed, Shamsur Rahman Shuvo, Irfan Sukkur, Khaled Mashud Pilot, and Imrul Kayes.

After more than a decade, the CWAB election is not just about choosing office bearers — it is seen as a platform that will represent the rights and welfare of Bangladesh’s professional cricketers.
