Cricket Canada Moves Quickly to Regain ICC Membership

Cricket Canada has stepped up efforts to secure the swift reinstatement of its membership after being suspended by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The governing body says it has submitted a “comprehensive” action plan to address the ICC’s concerns and has already begun implementing necessary reforms.

The ICC recently suspended Cricket Canada’s associate membership for what it described as serious breaches of membership obligations. Prior to the suspension, the ICC had also halted funding to the organization. During a routine compliance review, the ICC raised concerns regarding Cricket Canada’s governance structure, financial oversight, and executive and administrative processes.

The decision follows a prolonged period of organizational instability within Cricket Canada. Controversy surrounded the appointment and subsequent removal of former Chief Executive Officer Salman Khan. According to reports, previous criminal charges against Khan were not disclosed to the ICC during the hiring process. Khan was later charged with theft and fraud by Calgary Police, although he has denied the allegations.

In May, Arvinder Khosa was elected president of a newly formed nine-member board of directors. The new leadership has since begun efforts to reform the organization’s governance framework.

To investigate the issues highlighted by the ICC, Cricket Canada has established an independent committee led by lawyer Dasha Peregoudova. The committee is expected to submit interim recommendations within two weeks and a full report within 45 days. Cricket Canada says the committee has unrestricted access to financial records, personnel information, and all relevant documentation.

As part of the process to regain its membership, Cricket Canada will also work with the ICC’s normalization committee. The committee includes Cricket Australia Chair Mike Baird and ICC Deputy Chair Imran Khwaja, among other officials.

Cricket Canada Chief Executive Officer Samir Jauhar said the suspension was unexpected, particularly as the independent committee had already begun its work. However, he emphasized that the organization respects the ICC’s decision and remains fully committed to meeting all compliance requirements. He added that the board has instructed the committee to accelerate its investigation and reform efforts to strengthen governance, financial oversight, and reporting systems without delay.
