Bangladesh's fielding has improved. Such words hold truth. However, the tendency to falter in fielding persists within the team. Bangladesh's pace bowling coach, Andrew Adams, seemed to imply just that in a press conference. Despite remarkable fielding on the ground, occasionally, Bangladeshi cricketers make errors that cost the team dearly.
Today, in Chittagong, a similar incident occurred in the second Test against Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan openers Nishan Madushka and Dimuth Karunaratne partnered to increase the team's runs. They built a solid foundation without losing a wicket in the first session. The team lost its first wicket at a score of 96.
Yet, there was an opportunity at 9 runs. Madushka could have been sent back. Bangladesh squandered that opportunity. Welcoming Karunaratne back to the pavilion could have changed the game's course. However, Bangladesh failed to capitalize.
Accusations rang out in Adams' voice, "We created opportunities in the morning, but we couldn't capitalize. A similar incident occurred in the first Test as well. Despite taking five early wickets, we couldn't perform well later. Dropping catches is disappointing. It feels like déjà vu from the first Test. Though we are under pressure, we are not holding on for long. Hence, we need to perform exceptionally well now. We need to hold on for a longer time."
Adams seemed content with Bangladesh's fielding but expressed disappointment as well. The team took some fantastic catches but also missed a few. He stated, "Yes, definitely. If you miss catches in cricket, you pay the price. Since coming to Bangladesh, I have seen their fielding has been outstanding. Their ground fielding is fantastic, they are very fit. We've taken some great catches, but we've also missed some. Especially in the beginning, this has cost us dearly."
Adams emphasized that nobody wants to drop catches, yet it happens. He urged for more focus and effort, saying, "Nobody wants to miss catches. We are working on it. We need to work here and make sure we don't drop catches. Everyone needs to be alert about dropping catches. No one wants to drop catches. That's cricket."
In summary, Adams' words reflect both appreciation for Bangladesh's fielding improvements and concern over the missed opportunities, stressing the need for consistency and focus in catching."
