BCCI Mourns the Sad Demise of Padmakar Shivalkar
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has expressed deep sorrow over the unfortunate passing of India's legendary left-arm spinner, Padmakar Shivalkar. He breathed his last on March 3. Shivalkar was a shining star of Indian domestic cricket, remembered for his exceptional spin-bowling skills and unwavering dedication to the game.
A stalwart of Ranji Trophy, Shivalkar picked up 589 wickets in 124 first-class matches at an astonishing average of 19.69. His precise line and length, impeccable flight, and sharp turn often puzzled batters. His most remarkable performance came in the 1972-73 Ranji Trophy final, where he registered 8/16 and 5/18, leading Mumbai to a famous victory over Tamil Nadu.
Throughout his career, Shivalkar consistently troubled batters, even on unfavorable pitches, showcasing his ability to extract spin and deceive opponents. His bowling was an art form, capable of challenging the best batters. Even after turning 40, he continued to bowl effectively, a testament to his patience and love for the game.
Despite his brilliance, Shivalkar never got the opportunity to represent India at the international level. However, his immense contribution to Indian cricket was recognized when BCCI honored him with the "Col. C. K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award" in 2017.
Tributes from BCCI Officials
BCCI President Roger Binny stated,
"Indian cricket has lost a true legend today. Padmakar Shivalkar's bowling mastery and deep understanding of the game made him an icon in domestic cricket. His contributions to Mumbai and Indian cricket will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to his family."
BCCI Secretary Debojit Saikia added,
"Shivalkar Sir inspired generations of cricketers. His consistency, flawless bowling technique, and long career were truly commendable. Despite never playing international cricket, his impact on Mumbai and Indian cricket remains unparalleled. We have lost a revered guardian of Indian cricket. My condolences to his family."
