Bangladeshs Fate in the T20 World Cup to Be Decided on Wednesday
The World Cup usually brings excitement, but for Bangladesh this time, uncertainty has overshadowed anticipation. The final answer to whether Bangladesh will participate in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup will be known on Wednesday (21 January). On that day, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is set to announce its decision regarding Bangladesh.
ICC representatives confirmed this information to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) during a meeting held last Saturday. To discuss Bangladesh’s participation in the World Cup, ICC Integrity Unit General Manager Andrew Ffregave visited Dhaka. ICC General Manager (Events and Corporate Communications) Gaurav Saxena joined the meeting virtually.
During the meeting, the BCB clearly stated that due to security concerns, it would not be possible for Bangladesh to travel to India to play in the World Cup. As a result, the BCB also discussed the option of a group change with the ICC in order to minimize logistical complications.
However, sources have indicated that the ICC has not agreed to Bangladesh’s request for a group change. As things stand, the possibility of moving Ireland from Group ‘B’ to Group ‘C’ and Bangladesh from Group ‘C’ to Group ‘B’ has all but been ruled out.
From the ICC’s side, it was repeatedly assured during the meeting that there are no security risks for the Bangladesh team at venues in India. In this situation, the ICC is now waiting for Bangladesh’s final decision.
If Bangladesh ultimately decides not to travel to India, the ICC may include another team in their place for the World Cup. Based on rankings, Scotland is considered the most likely replacement.
Whether all of Bangladesh’s matches will be shifted to Sri Lanka, played in India, or whether another decision will be taken altogether—clarity on Bangladesh’s World Cup fate is expected by Wednesday
