Bangladeshi umpire Saikat on international duty in India amid political tensions
At a time when cricketing relations between the two countries are marked by tension and uncertainty, experienced Bangladeshi umpire Sharafuddaula Ibne Shahid Saikat has sent a strong message of professionalism on the international stage. He has come into focus after serving as the TV umpire in the first match of the three-match ODI series between India and New Zealand.
Saikat officiated as the TV umpire in the opening ODI of the series, held on Sunday in Vadodara, Gujarat. The on-field umpires for the match were England’s Richard Illingworth and India’s KN Ananthapadmanabhan.
Saikat has been regularly officiating in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). After overseeing the match between Noakhali Express and Rajshahi Warriors last Thursday, he responded to the ICC’s call and arrived in India within just three days. His visit comes at a sensitive time, as Bangladesh has stated its position of not travelling to India for the T20 World Cup due to security concerns. As a result, Saikat’s presence in India has naturally sparked discussion.
A member of the ICC Elite Panel, Sharafuddaula Ibne Shahid Saikat has long been a familiar name in international cricket. So far, he has officiated in 32 Test matches. He was also on-field during the Brisbane Test of the recently concluded Ashes series, highlighting his vast experience. The 49-year-old umpire has officiated in 118 ODIs and 75 T20 Internationals.
