Bangladesh Women’s Team Clinches Record-Breaking 154-Run Victory Over Ireland in First ODI
The Bangladesh women’s cricket team secured a dominant 154-run victory over Ireland in the opening match of their white-ball series, marking a historic achievement. This was Ireland's first-ever visit to Bangladesh for a limited-overs series, and they were humbled after posting just 98 runs in response to Bangladesh’s imposing total of 252. This victory set a new record for Bangladesh women, with their highest-ever score in an ODI.
In the first innings at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, Bangladesh posted an impressive 252 runs for 4 wickets. This was their highest total in women’s ODIs, with notable contributions from Sharmeen Supta, who fell just 4 runs short of a century, and opener Farzana Haque Pinky, who scored a half-century. The opening partnership between Farzana and Murshida Khatun produced 59 runs, before Murshida was dismissed for 38 runs in the 19th over, breaking the opening stand.
Farzana continued to build on the strong start, scoring 61 runs from 110 balls, with 4 boundaries. She was joined by Sharmeen Supta at number three, who, alongside captain Nigar Sultana, pushed the team towards a commanding total. Nigar, the captain, contributed 28 runs from 28 balls before being dismissed. Supta, who was well on her way to a century, scored 56 runs before falling in the 49th over, just 4 runs short of a well-deserved century.
Ireland’s response to the 253-run target was disappointing. They were bundled out for just 98 runs in 28.5 overs, failing to reach even 100 runs. Bangladesh’s bowlers were in outstanding form, with Nahida Akter and Sultana Khatun each taking 3 wickets. Marufa Akter also had a stellar performance with the ball, claiming 2 wickets for just 18 runs in her 4 overs.
Among the Irish batters, only three reached double figures, with Sarah Forbes top-scoring with 25 runs from 51 balls before being run out. The rest of the Irish batting collapsed, with four players getting out for ducks. Bangladesh’s bowlers dominated, leaving Ireland with no chance to mount a comeback.
With this commanding 154-run victory, Bangladesh takes a 1-0 lead in the series, sending a strong message to Ireland. The team's dominant all-round performance has given them the perfect start to the series.
