Bangladesh U-19s make a winning start against Afghanistan
International cricket returned to Bogura’s Shaheed Chandu Stadium after a long 16-year wait, and the Bangladesh Under-19 team marked the occasion in style with a thrilling victory over Afghanistan U-19s. The venue last hosted an international match in 2008, and on its comeback to the global stage, the young Tigers celebrated with a memorable win.
Batting first after winning the toss, Afghanistan U-19s posted a challenging total of 265 for 9 in their 50 overs. In reply, Bangladesh U-19s reached 231 for 4 in 46 overs when poor light stopped play. The hosts were declared winners by 5 runs via the Duckworth–Lewis method.
Bangladesh’s chase got off to a shaky start as the top order failed to deliver, leaving the team under pressure. But a superb 139-run fourth-wicket stand between Kalam Siddique and Rizan Hossain turned the game around. Kalam played a magnificent knock of 101 off 119 balls before getting out, while Rizan’s composed innings kept Bangladesh on track for victory.
Earlier, Afghanistan’s innings was dominated by Uzairullah Niazi, who produced a brilliant unbeaten 140 off 137 balls, featuring 16 fours and a six.
For Bangladesh, pacer Iqbal Hossain Imon was the standout performer with the ball, claiming 5 wickets for 57 runs to earn the Player of the Match award.
With this win, Bangladesh U-19s made a perfect start to the series. The second match will be played at the same venue on October 31, before the final three one-dayers shift to Rajshahi.
