After a rain-hit morning, the skies cleared in Sylhet to provide the perfect backdrop for the opening T20I between Bangladesh and the Netherlands on Saturday. In front of a lively crowd at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, the Tigers produced a dominant all-round display to clinch an 8-wicket victory and take a 1–0 lead in the three-match series.
Winning the toss, captain Liton Das opted to bowl first. The Dutch side struggled against disciplined Bangladeshi bowling and managed 136 for 8 in 20 overs. The chase proved straightforward, as Bangladesh stormed to the target in just 13.3 overs, sealing a comfortable win.
Bangladesh’s reply got off to a shaky start as openers Parvez Hossain Emon (16) and Tanzid Hasan Tamim (29 off 29) departed cheaply. But Liton Das held the innings together with a blistering 54 off 29 balls, featuring six boundaries and a six. He was ably supported by Saif Hassan, who smashed an unbeaten 36 off 19 balls, including a towering six off Vikramjit Singh that sealed victory.
Saif was the standout performer of the match, impressing with both bat and ball. Earlier, his off-spin accounted for two vital wickets—Dutch skipper Scott Edwards (12) and Teja Nidamanuru (26). Taskin Ahmed was the chief destroyer, finishing with 4 wickets, while Mustafizur Rahman chipped in with one as the Netherlands faltered under pressure.
Taskin’s early strike removed Max O’Dowd (26), before Saif’s double blow tilted the momentum firmly in Bangladesh’s favor. Mustafiz then cleaned up the tail, restricting the visitors to a below-par total.
Recalled to the XI in place of Shamim Patwari after the Pakistan series, Saif Hassan proved his worth immediately with a brilliant all-round display. His match-winning contribution highlighted Bangladesh’s depth and provided the team with a timely boost.
In the end, Bangladesh’s disciplined bowling and explosive batting combined to deliver a clinical performance. With this victory, the Tigers take an early advantage in the series, and will look to carry the momentum into the next match.
