Bangladesh Target Three Wins at Womens T20 World Cup
The Women’s T20 World Cup has always been a difficult stage for Bangladesh. Even after six editions, success has remained limited, with disappointment outweighing achievements. However, carrying the memories of past failures, Nigar Sultana Jyoti’s side is now determined to write a new story. To the captain, this World Cup is not just another tournament, but an opportunity to change the history of Bangladesh women’s cricket.
So far, Bangladesh have played 25 matches in the Women’s T20 World Cup and managed to win only three. Victories against Sri Lanka, Ireland and Scotland remain their only bright memories, while the other 22 matches ended in defeat. Batting struggles, in particular, have been a long-standing problem for the team. Although the bowlers have often delivered strong performances, Bangladesh have failed to produce big totals, which has cost them in most matches.
As part of their preparation for the upcoming World Cup, Bangladesh will participate in a tri-nation series in Scotland. Alongside the hosts, the Netherlands will also compete in the tournament. The team will leave the country in two separate groups at 1:40 am tonight and again on the morning of May 26.
Before departing, Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana Jyoti addressed the media at a press conference in Mirpur on Sunday and spoke about leaving past disappointments behind to begin a new journey. Rather than seeing the losing streak as pressure, she considers it a challenge to prove themselves and create history. Jyoti said, “We were going through a winless road. But I am not seeing it as a burden; rather, I see it as a challenge to change history.”
Ahead of the World Cup, Jyoti also expressed confidence in the team’s preparation and mindset. Although recent series results did not go in Bangladesh’s favour, the team tried to take positives from those performances. The captain is especially optimistic about the consistency of the bowling unit and the form of a few players. Explaining the team’s preparation in detail, Jyoti said, “We have been working since the last series. We played some matches there, and although the results did not go in our favour, there were many positives to take. Our bowling unit is doing well, and there are two or three specific players who have been consistent. Our focus was to ensure that those who are performing well can carry that form forward and continue in the same way during the World Cup.”
