Bangladesh Loses to Sri Lanka by 18 Runs in Hong Kong Sixes, Advances to Next Round After Win Over Oman
Bangladesh faced an 18-run defeat against Sri Lanka in the Hong Kong Sixes tournament. Despite a close contest led by Jishan Alam and Mohammad Saifuddin, the Tigers fell short against the Lankan side. However, Bangladesh had already secured their place in the next round with a victory over Oman.
On Friday, Bangladesh lost the toss, and Sri Lanka opted to bat first, scoring 107 runs for 3 wickets in the allotted 6 overs. In reply, Bangladesh was restricted to 89 runs, losing 3 wickets.
Sri Lanka’s openers started strong, with Sadun Birakkodi scoring 18 off 6 balls before being dismissed by Sohag Gazi. Then, a powerful partnership between Thanuka Dabare and Lihiru Madushanka helped Sri Lanka reach a solid total of 107. Thanuka scored 32 runs from 12 balls, while Lihiru remained unbeaten with 48 runs off 17 balls.
For Bangladesh, Jishan Alam took 2 wickets for just 6 runs, while Sohag Gazi claimed one wicket.
Chasing 108, Bangladesh lost Yasir Ali early for 6 off 2 balls. Jishan Alam and Mohammad Saifuddin built a partnership, though they started slowly and later accelerated. However, the efforts were not enough to reach the target. Jishan scored 27 from 13 balls, while Abu Hider made 4 from 2 balls. Bangladesh's innings concluded at 89 runs in 6 overs, with Saifuddin remaining unbeaten on 42 from 17 balls.
Hong Kong Sixes Rules
General:Each match is played between two teams of six players each, with a maximum of six overs per team. One bowler can bowl a maximum of two overs, which cannot be consecutive. Four other fielders (excluding the wicketkeeper) will bowl one over each. Wides and no-balls award the batting team one run and an extra ball.
Last Man Stands: If a team loses 5 wickets within 6 overs (excluding retired batters), the last batter may continue with the 5th out batter as a runner. The last batter must always be on strike. If the runner is run out or interferes with the field, the last batter will be declared out, ending the innings with the fall of the 6th wicket.
Batter Retirement:When a batter scores 50, they must retire as "not out." However, they may resume if a wicket falls in the last pair. Multiple retired batters will return in the order they retired, and any batter who fails to return in the correct order will be declared "retired out."
