After losing the first ODI, Bangladesh had no option but to win the second match to keep their hopes alive in the series. However, a batting collapse saw them lose 7 wickets for just 115 runs. Despite this, a resilient 8th-wicket partnership between experienced Mahmudullah Riyad and Tanzim Hasan Sakib helped Bangladesh reach a challenging total of 227 runs.
The West Indies bowlers, led by Jayden Seales and Gudakesh Motie, were dominant throughout the innings. At one point, Bangladesh seemed in danger of collapsing before the allotted overs. After 25.3 overs, they were reduced to 115/7, but the partnership between Riyad and Sakib, which added 92 runs, helped them recover somewhat. Sakib played a career-best innings of 45 runs, while Riyad scored 62 runs before being dismissed.
West Indies captain Shai Hope won the toss and opted to bowl first. Like the previous match, Tanzid Hasan Tamim started aggressively, but his opening partner Soumya Sarkar was dismissed quickly for just 2 runs, caught by Seales. Liton Das, coming in at number 3, was dismissed for just 4 runs, caught off Seales’ bowling.
All three of Bangladesh’s top-order wickets were taken by Seales, and then spinner Gudakesh Motie joined the attack. Captain Mehedi Hasan Miraz failed to score more than 1 run. Bangladesh was in further trouble when Tanzid Tamim was dismissed for 46 runs, leaving the team at 64/4. Motie continued his excellent bowling, taking the wickets of Afif Hossain (24 runs) and Zaker Ali Anik (3 runs off 9 balls). Rishad Hossain was dismissed for a duck, as he became Marquino Mindley’s first international wicket.
At 115/7 in the 25th over, Bangladesh’s hopes seemed grim. But then, Mahmudullah and Tanzim Sakib came together to form a strong resistance. The pair shared a record-breaking 92-run partnership for the 8th wicket, with Sakib contributing a remarkable 45 runs off 62 balls, including 4 boundaries and 2 sixes, before being caught off Roston Chase’s bowling.
After Sakib’s departure, Riyad couldn’t hold on for long and was dismissed by Seales for 62 runs. Despite their dismissals, the 8th-wicket partnership was crucial in helping Bangladesh post a competitive total.
