Bangladesh Can Still Reach Champions Trophy Semifinals Even After One Loss
Despite losing their opening match to India, Bangladesh still has a chance to reach the semifinals of the Champions Trophy. After the loss, there is still hope for Najmul Hossain Shanto's team to progress to the next round. If Bangladesh wins their remaining two matches, they will definitely qualify, but even winning just one match could be enough to make it to the semifinals.
The Tigers’ remaining two matches in the group stage will be played in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. Bangladesh will face New Zealand on February 24 and hosts Pakistan on February 27. To reach the semifinals, Bangladesh must win both of these games.
However, it is also possible for Bangladesh to qualify for the semifinals even with just one win, though they would need to navigate through some complicated calculations. The four teams in Group 'A' have each played one match so far. India and New Zealand are in the top two positions with their wins, while Bangladesh sits third, just ahead of Pakistan, who are in fourth place due to a lower net run rate.
To secure a semifinal spot, Bangladesh's first priority is to win both of their remaining matches. They will need to defeat New Zealand first, and then overcome hosts Pakistan. If Bangladesh wins both matches, they will earn 4 points on the points table.
If both India and New Zealand win one more match each, they will also have 4 points. In that case, the net run rate will become crucial. If Bangladesh can surpass the run rates of any two teams, they will qualify for the semifinals.
If Bangladesh wins only one match, they will have 2 points. If that win comes against New Zealand, Bangladesh will need to watch the results of the Pakistan-India and New Zealand-India matches. In both of these matches, Bangladesh will need India to win to have a chance of qualifying.
