Afghanistan secured a comprehensive 82-run win over Canada in Chennai on February 19, showcasing dominance in both batting and bowling departments.
After winning the toss and opting to bat, Afghanistan made a confident start, putting together a 47-run opening partnership. However, Rahmanullah Gurbaz was dismissed for 30, leaving the team at 49 for 2 within the power play.
Ibrahim Zadran then took charge of the innings. The right-hander brought up his second consecutive half-century of the tournament and built a crucial 95-run partnership with Sediqullah Atal (44), laying a solid foundation.
Zadran remained unbeaten on 95 off 56 balls, marking his highest individual score and the highest by an Afghanistan batter in this World Cup edition. His impressive knock featured seven fours and five sixes, guiding Afghanistan to 200 for 4 in their allotted 20 overs.
For Canada, Jaskarandeep Singh claimed 3 wickets for 52 runs in his four overs.
Chasing 201, Canada came under pressure early. Yuvraj Samra scored 17 off 14 balls before departing. Captain Dilpreet Bajwa was bowled by Mujeeb Ur Rahman for 13, while Navneet Dhailwal was dismissed for a duck by Azmatullah Omarzai. Canada were 34 for 3 after six overs.
The wickets continued to tumble after the power play. Mohammad Nabi removed Nicholas Kirton (20) in the eighth over, and Rashid Khan dismissed Shreyas Movva (2) in the following over, reducing Canada to 48 for 5 in nine overs.
Saad Bin Zafar scored 28 in an attempt to steady the innings, but the required run rate kept climbing. Dilon Heyliger (3), Jaskaran Singh (7 not out), and Ansh Patel (2 not out) failed to make significant contributions as Canada finished on 118 for 8 in 20 overs.
For Afghanistan, Mohammad Nabi delivered an outstanding spell, taking 4 wickets for just 7 runs. Captain Rashid Khan picked up 2 for 19, while Azmatullah Omarzai and Mujeeb Ur Rahman claimed one wicket each.
