Afghanistan Beat Bangladesh by 92 Runs
Afghanistan launched the ODI series with a commanding 92-run victory over Bangladesh in Sharjah. Bangladesh’s batting line-up crumbled against spin, unable to withstand the pressure in the desert conditions. Allah Ghazanfar was the chief architect of Bangladesh’s downfall, claiming his first five-wicket haul in international cricket.
Ghazanfar’s exceptional performance saw him take six wickets for just 26 runs, as Bangladesh was bowled out for 143 runs in 34.3 overs. Despite being in a stable position at 120 for 2, Bangladesh’s batting collapsed as they lost their remaining eight wickets for only 23 runs. Seven of their batters were dismissed with single-digit scores.
This defeat marks Bangladesh’s eighth consecutive loss, including recent series against India and South Africa, as Najmul Hossain Shanto’s team succumbed to the challenge of chasing Afghanistan’s target of 236, managing only 143 runs.
Opener Tanzid Tamim was dismissed early for 3, but the next three batters offered some stability. Opener Soumya Sarkar scored 33 off 45 balls, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto contributed 47, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz added 28 before returning to the pavilion. Only one other batsman, Towhid Hridoy (11), reached double digits.
Bangladesh’s innings took a sharp decline after Shanto’s dismissal at 120. Experienced players Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah Riyad were unable to make an impact, with Mahmudullah scoring just 2 before being bowled by Rashid Khan while attempting an ill-advised drive. Mushfiqur, who scored 1, was stumped trying to play a flick forward
