ACC Annual General Meeting Set for Thursday in Dhaka; BCCI to Join Virtually Amid Tensions
The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is set to hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Thursday in Dhaka, with key discussions centered around the fate of the upcoming Asia Cup, scheduled for September. Despite initial uncertainties due to political tensions, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed it will participate virtually.
Amid a week of heightened political friction between Bangladesh and India, there were concerns that the BCCI might boycott the meeting. However, according to a senior BCCI official quoted anonymously by an Indian media outlet on Wednesday,
“We will join the meeting virtually, in the spirit of playing the role of a big brother.”
Not only India, but Sri Lanka will also attend the meeting via video conferencing. Reports indicate that there were attempts to exclude Afghanistan and Oman from the meeting to prevent a quorum. However, ACC Chairman Mohsin Naqvi’s intervention ensured the meeting would go ahead as planned.
UAE Likely to Host 2025 Asia Cup
A final decision on the 2025 Asia Cup is also expected during the AGM. As part of the diplomatic fallout from the recent 'Operation Sindoor', member boards have reportedly agreed to shift the tournament from India to the UAE. While India is expected to formally propose itself as the host, the UAE remains the most likely venue given consensus among other members.
An official announcement regarding the Asia Cup’s venue and participating teams is expected following the conclusion of the AGM.
